God as Giver

What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.  The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. (Acts 17:23)

God is the Creator and Lord of everything and everyone.  He has no need of us to do anything.  He alone, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the giver and by his grace believers and unbelievers alike enjoy these good gifts of life and breath and everything.  This he does according to his own will and good pleasure and for his own glory.

For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?

Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?

For from him and through him and to him are all things.

To him be glory forever. Amen (Romans 11:34-36)

Especially, though, and again by his grace, he gives salvation and blessings in Christ to those who are his in Christ:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 1:3)

It is a gift, not earned, given according to his own mercy and grace and love.

For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

(Ephesians 2:8,9)

And he assures us that the work of salvation that he has begun in them he will bring through to the end.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 1:6)

He adds to this knowledge by telling us how he works in us we live our lives in Christ here until he comes. He will complete our sanctification (being conformed to the image of Christ) and cause us to bring glory to him.

  • Christ has prayed for us and lives in us (John 17:17; Galatians 2:20).
  • He has already prepared what he has for us to do in Christ (Ephesians 2:10)
  • He continually gives us what we need to do it and works in and through us (John 15:5; 1 Cor. 1:4-7; Phil 2:12-13; Colossians 1: 9-12; 2 Thess. 2:16-17)

Remember these words of Christ:

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)
